Welcome to Charlton

Charlton sits just south of the River Thames in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, to the west of Woolwich. The area stretches from the high ground of the village down to the industrial riverside, while the streets surrounding Charlton station provide local shops and pubs, creating a real sense of community.
Once a rural village, the district developed around its manor house and parish church. The Jacobean Charlton House, built in 1612, is one of London’s finest surviving examples of its era, surrounded by original parkland. Over time, the riverside streets have seen industrial growth and new housing, but the village core has retained its old-world charm. Today, the neighbourhood is home to a thriving community with a mix of ages, backgrounds and cultures. Families are drawn to the excellent schools and green spaces, while young professionals and long-standing locals appreciate the variety of homes and the welcoming atmosphere.

Property in Charlton

The area offers a diverse array of property styles. Expect to find Jacobean gems like Charlton House, classic Victorian and Edwardian terraces, post-war houses and riverside developments. Period cottages are dotted around the village centre, with Poplar Cottage being Charlton’s last surviving example of a weatherboard cottage, built around 1695.
Modern apartments and houses in new developments can be found closer to the river, providing options for contemporary living. The variety of property types means there’s something for families, first-time buyers, professional tenants and anyone looking for more space within commuting distance of central London.

Discover More

The neighbourhood offers a range of shops, cosy cafés and traditional pubs, including The Bugle Horn, a 17th-century coaching inn. Standout attractions include the magnificent Charlton House, with its historic interiors and beautiful walled gardens. In New Charlton is the Thames Barrier, an engineering marvel with a visitor centre. For sporting fans, Charlton’s stadium, ‘The Valley,’ is a local institution, or you can visit Charlton Lido, an Olympic-sized pool heated to 25 degrees all year. Charlton Retail Park is also nearby, providing a variety of shopping options, high-street stores and restaurants.

Green Spaces in Charlton

Green spaces are a major draw, with several parks having been awarded Green Flag status. Charlton Park is a beautiful leafy park with sports pitches, playgrounds and walled gardens. Maryon and Maryon Wilson Parks offer woodlands and grassland, with the popular Maryon Wilson Animal Park home to sheep, goats, and deer. Hornfair Park also includes a BMX track, football pitches, hard tennis courts and a basketball court.

Charlton Transport Links

The area is a well-connected location for commuters and families, with regular mainline services from Charlton station to London Bridge, Cannon Street and Greenwich. Numerous bus services run to North Greenwich for the Jubilee line, as well as to Blackheath and beyond. Bus links to nearby Woolwich offer access to the Elizabeth line for fast services across the capital. The nearby A206 provides convenient road access, and cycling routes follow the Thames Path and local green corridors.
