As the frontman of controversial British punk rock band the Sex Pistols, Johnny Rotten performed the top 10 hit
‘Pretty Vacant’.
And now it’s a case of life imitating art as his former home, in one of London’s smartest neighbourhoods, has hit
the market.
Rotten allegedly hosted many raucous parties at the house in Chelsea, which he bought in 1978 – the year the
Sex Pistols split up.
And the stream of visitors is thought to have included leading members of the punk scene such as the Sex Pistols
bassist Sid Vicious and his girlfriend Nancy Spungen, DJ and musician Don Letts and band The Slits.
Rotten, whose real name is John Lydon, abandoned the house in 1981 and moved to New York.
Set within the Victorian house on Gunter Grove, this plush three-bedroom maisonette has a spacious reception
room with a fish tank, dining area and contemporary kitchen with all the mod cons. There’s also three double
bedrooms, two bathrooms and a private roof terrace with panoramic views of Chelsea.
The split-level home costs a cool 5,612 to rent per month via Breteuil, Foxtons and Marsh & Parsons.
This corner of London is highly sought-after. It boasts high-end shops, restaurants, bars and cafes as well as
museums. And it hosts the annual Chelsea Flower Show.
House prices in the area typically average 1.7m, having jumped 464,391, or 37% in the last five years.
The most expensive roads include:
Chelsea has a bohemian past. It was at the heart of swinging London in the 1960s. And Rotten’s former home is a
stone’s throw from the King’s Road, the infamous birth place of punk music, where the Sex Pistols first burst onto
the scene in the 1970s. The Rolling Stones, Bob Marley and Eric Clapton are among the big names that have
lived in the area.
